Dean Bowen

Dean Bowen is an Australian artist working across a number of mediums including painting, sculpture and printmaking. He has held over eighty solo exhibitions in Australia, France, Japan, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

He has received a number of major sculpture commissions and awards including Deakin University, Burwood Campus, sculpture commission 2014, Grimwade House, Melbourne Grammar School, sculpture commission 2014, Lavington Library sculpture commission 2014 City of Albury, Hamilton Art Gallery sculpture commission 2013, Wyndham City sculpture commission 2012, Arts/ACT sculpture commission 2011, the Colas Fondation painting commission, Paris, France 2010; Hobson's Bay City Council, sculpture commission 2010; Canterbury Primary School, Centennial Sculpture Commission 2008; City of Greater Shepparton sculpture commission 2006; Popular Choice Award, Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award 2003; the Tai-he Award, 1st International Print Biennial of Beijing 2000; Daikin Industries Company Prize, Osaka International Print Triennale, Japan 1997; Melbourne Town Hall Tapestry Commission, City of Melbourne 1995; and the Fremantle Print Award, Fremantle, Western Australia 1994.

Dean Bowen's work is represented in over seventy national and international collections including, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; artsACT, ACT Government; Parliament House Art Collection Canberra; Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Geelong Gallery; City of Melbourne, McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery and Fukuoka Museum of Art, Japan.

He is renowned for his artwork depicting vibrant birds and animals as well as urban and country scenes. His vision and diverse range of mediums, whether it be painting, sculpture or printmaking, come together to produce images that are joyous, lively and full of humour. Providing a contrast to the typical image of the Australian landscape, Bowen's scenes of urban and rural life are often populated by whimsical and cheerful characters, living harmoniously within their constructed environments

A major monograph of the artist's work, Dean Bowen Argy Bargy, by Sheridan Palmer was published in 2009 by Macmillan Art Publishing. The book,"Argy Bargy" documents his artworks over a twenty year period.
